My name is Kayla Gilliland and I have been teaching for the past five years at Morgan South Elementary. In that time, I worked in 4th and fifth grade intervention, and for the past three years I have been teaching first grade. In my first year, I also taught part time in the school’s after school program, and for the last two years, I have been volunteering to help run the after school Bible club. Prior to beginning my full-time placement, I completed a semester of long term substitute teaching in biology and anatomy at Morgan High School, and finished the school year as the building substitute at Morgan West Elementary School before the closure of schools in 2020 due to Covid-19. I am a 2019 graduate of Cincinnati Christian University with a bachelor’s degree in early childhood education and completion of the university honor’s program. I have my license to teach preschool-third grade as well as my generalist endorsement to teach fourth-fifth grade. In my time at CCU, I completed over 400 hours of field experience in various classrooms at rural, suburban, and urban schools. I also worked part time at an after school program in Newport, Kentucky during the school year, and spent two summers working at a daycare in Malta. Upon graduation from CCU, I received an education award for outstanding performance among my graduating class, as well as an Outstanding Achievement Award for achieving a score of 46 on the EdTPA National Teacher Performance Assessment. I believe that my varied experience has given me the chance to learn and explore the ways that children develop and interact at different ages and in different situations.
I have had a love of learning and children for as long as I can remember. I began teaching as soon as I could, leading programs in church and 4-H and even shadowing a local teacher when I was in junior high. After high school, education was the only field of study that I could ever imagine exploring. Since graduating college and beginning my professional career, that love has only deepened. I have completed coursework in the LETRS phonics and reading program, AVMR math recovery program, and trust based relationships from the Karyn Purvis Institute of Child development at Texas Christian University. I am passionate about children and education, and a firm believer that a loving and supportive classroom community can change a child’s life forever. I consider myself very blessed to be a part of every learning experience that I get to share with my students over the course of a school year.
I would love to learn more about becoming a part of your school. Please feel free to explore my site and view my resume, experiences, sample lesson plans, and more. You can also contact me to request any further information that you may need. I will add as a note that I am recently married and still in the process of completing my legal name change, so on most documents my name will still appear as “Kayla Ross”.
Thank you for your time. I look forward to hearing from you,
Kayla Gilliland
